We have had a few phone calls regarding some scam phone calls from some very dodgy people claiming to be the ATO. It’s important that you know what to do, and you don’t fall into their trap.
So, someone is calling you claiming to be the ATO – what do you do?
- Do not answer any questions
- Do not provide any personal information
- Tell them to call your Accountant – if they ask who that is, tell them they work for the ATO and they will have it on file
- Call your Accountant and tell them what happened
- Report it to the ATO
If you lodge your tax returns, and any other tax related documents with an Accountant, the ATO will generally never call you. Nor will they demand money over the phone, or threaten legal action.
If you think something may not be right, your gut may well be correct.

Have you received a suspicious email?
As well as phone calls, there have also been some scams involving fake emails, text messages and fake MyGov login pages.
Be very mindful of anything you receive, as some look quite convincing.
The Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC) have this to say:
“These scams can come through as emails, text messages and fake myGov login pages. Usually these scams will say you’re entitled to a tax refund or that you need to pay a debt”.
“They are also made to look very real through the sophisticated use of myGov and ATO logos, information and even email addresses which makes it easy for anyone to fall victim.”
“These scam messages often include links that direct you to fake websites or login pages where you enter your login details and fill out your personal details to claim a ‘refund’. Scammers can then use this information to commit credit card or tax fraud and identity theft. By clicking on these links, you also run the risk of downloading malware onto your computer.”
Be careful with your information.
